“Pupils, including students in the sixth form, are happy and proud of their school ... [They] receive carefully tailored academic and pastoral support from adults in school. This well-planned guidance helps pupils to meet the high expectations that staff have of their achievement and behaviour. Pupils … achieve well across most subjects [and] have positive attitudes to learning and towards each other. Students in the sixth form act as role models for their younger peers … Anti-bullying and mental health ambassadors are proactive and wear their badges with pride ... Pupils and students told inspectors how much they appreciated leaders’ commitment to making everyone feel valued.”

*Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgment in inspections of state-funded schools. A five-point grading scale, including a new “exceptional” grade was introduced in November 2025.

About the school

Honesty, excellence, fairness, community, and endeavour are prized at this coeducational school where the aim is to create happy and successful young people.
There is no uniform in the sixth form but students are expected to dress appropriately for a “professional working environment”.
Notable alumni include Bill Speakman, recipient of the Victoria Cross, and the first person to receive an honour from Queen Elizabeth II.
The school holds gold awards from Artsmark in recognition of its high quality arts provision, and EAL (English as an additional language) Quality Mark. There is a buddy system to help new pupils who speak English as an additional language.
Lunchtime clubs cover interests from gardening to anime. Lessons are available to learn a variety of musical instruments and sports teams have excelled in netball and hockey.
