- Founded in 1937 as Bexley Technical High School for Girls, today the school operates a mixed sixth form.
- In 2018 Townley featured in a “fly-on-the-wall” BBC documentary, Grammar Schools: Who Will Get In?, about the 11-plus process.

- In 2025 the Schools, Students and Teachers network recognised it with an award, saying its “approach to developing student leadership is a real strength”.
- Alumni include Baroness Amos, the Labour peer and master of University College Oxford, the Olympic weightlifter Zoe Smith and the fashion photographer Nadine Ijewere.
