What the school inspection says

“Pupils are very proud of their school. They feel highly valued and know that their voices are heard. For example, pupils made a significant contribution to the choice of books that they now study in English … New pupils are warmly welcomed … This includes boys in the sixth form ... Every pupil learns Latin as well as at least one modern foreign language. Dance is a very popular subject .... [Pupils] described it as ‘the beating heart of the school’.”

*Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgment in inspections of state-funded schools. A five-point grading scale, including a new “exceptional” grade was introduced in November 2025.

About the school

Founded in 1937 as Bexley Technical High School for Girls, today the school operates a mixed sixth form.
In 2018 Townley featured in a “fly-on-the-wall” BBC documentary, Grammar Schools: Who Will Get In?, about the 11-plus process.
The unofficial school motto is “From here it’s possible”.
In 2025 the Schools, Students and Teachers network recognised it with an award, saying its “approach to developing student leadership is a real strength”.
Alumni include Baroness Amos, the Labour peer and master of University College Oxford, the Olympic weightlifter Zoe Smith and the fashion photographer Nadine Ijewere.
