- Founded in 1888, RGS was known until 2006 as Rochester Grammar School for Girls. It remains a girls’ school up to the sixth form, which is now mixed.
- The school opened a second site to the south of Rochester in 1969 and completed its move there in 1990.
- In 2023 Unicef awarded it a silver Rights Respecting Schools award for its commitment to children’s rights.
- The sixth form has reverted to offering A-levels only from 2025-26, having previously switched to the International Baccalaureate.
- Former pupils include the only salaried female official war artist Evelyn Dunbar and Alice Oseman, creator of the Heartstopper graphic novels which became a hit Netflix TV series.
