What the school inspection says

Date of report
2019
Verdict
Excellent
“The school aims to educate the brightest young men in the North of England, regardless of their background. The progress made by pupils is exceptional [and they] consistently achieve results in public examinations that are far above national averages. Pupils respond positively to the school’s strategy of teaching the most demanding courses possible … [and] they respond avidly to the concept of pursuing knowledge for its own sake. Pupils have incisive minds and show a range of study skills far beyond the norm for their age. [They] welcome intellectual challenge [and] respond positively to criticism. They value highly their place in the history of the school, and take pride in its achievements.” There was a routine inspection in 2024.

About the school

  • Over its 500-year history this highly selective boys’ school has cemented its reputation as one of the country’s top academic schools.
  • Its founding principle was to provide “godliness and good learning” to the poor boys of Manchester. The high master, Martin Boulton, says the core mission today is still “to educate the brightest young men in the north of England, regardless of their social, cultural, religious and financial background”.
  • About 200 pupils, 12 per cent of the total, receive bursaries, most of them covering full fees and given to boys joining Year 7.
  • The 300-plus school trips each year include three annual treks to mountain ranges — most recently to the Atlas Mountains in North Africa and Wahiba Sands in Oman —  along with diving expeditions, gliding trips and weekly mountain activity days in the Lake District and Snowdonia.
