What the school inspection says

Verdict
Excellent
“The school aims to develop in its pupils a lifelong love of learning and to provide an outstanding single-sex education in a co-educational environment, alongside its sister school. The very high level of achievement in the school reflects the positive attitudes of the pupils and their innate, driving curiosity and zest for learning. Pupils display notably strong levels of study skills in the way they work … [and] achieve very high standards in their activities beyond the classroom benefiting from the broad co-curricular programme on offer in the school. Pupils are highly motivated in the desire to improve their learning and clearly enjoy their work. [They] have strong self-esteem and self-confidence, both in their academic ability but also in their own personal development.”

About the school

  • The school has shared a 104-acre campus with the Haberdashers’ Elstree Girls’ School for more than 50 years, but until recently the schools operated separately. Since 2021, all sixth-form pupils have at least one mixed class.
  • Habs Boys’ main building, the grade II* listed Aldenham House, was built in 1672.
  • It was formerly called Haberdashers’ Aske’s School, after Robert Aske, a merchant whose bequest to the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers founded the school.
  • Sporting facilities include seven rugby/football pitches, a 25m indoor pool, two squash courts, a climbing wall, a shooting range, three grass cricket squares and three artificial wickets with nets, and an indoor cricket centre, with bowling machines and video replays.
  • Among many Old Haberdashers of note are the comedians David Baddiel, Sacha Baron Cohen and Matt Lucas, the racing driver Damon Hill and the broadcaster Alan Whicker.
