- The result of a merger in 2005 of Leeds Grammar School and Leeds Girls’ High School, the Grammar School at Leeds is a coeducational day school.
- Pupils are encouraged to make use of the facilities on the 140-acre campus. A wide range of sports clubs are available, from basketball to hockey, along with an indoor climbing wall. Music ensembles are popular and each year more than 250 pupils are in a group or learning to play an instrument. The school’s beavers, cubs and scouts group is one of the largest in the UK. Cadets, chess, debating, language clubs, art and drama are among the other choices to keep pupils busy.
- A student-led “culture day” celebrates the school’s diverse community. Pupils wear national dress and stage performances for their peers.
- Small class sizes ensure staff have the time to get to know each child. Deputy heads, assistant heads, heads of year and teachers work as a team responsible for pastoral matters.
- More than 90 senior pupils receive means-tested financial assistance; many receive a full bursary.
- Notable former pupils include the politician Gerald Kaufman, the golfer Colin Montgomerie, the poet Tony Harrison and the writer Jeremy Dyson.
