What the school inspection says

Date of report
2023
Verdict *
Good
“This school has high academic ambitions for all pupils. Pupils value the education they receive. They benefit from the high-quality education that the school is providing. Many pupils are proud to achieve merits. They know that 130 merits will earn them an all-burgundy tie. Pupils who have these wear them with pride ... The curriculum is broad and ambitious for all pupils at this school ... There is now a whole-school strategy to develop a more inclusive culture.”

About the school

  • The Ecclesbourne School mission statement is “learning together for the future”.
  • The numbers of young people who are not in education, employment or training are extremely low, as are the school’s rates of exclusion and suspension. There are high expectations for pupils and all are challenged to raise their aspirations.
  • There are many sports clubs, interest groups, residentials, trips abroad and societies, from the Duke of Edinburgh's Award to the debating society, while BTecs, Cambridge Nationals and ABRSM music qualifications are also on offer.
  • The house system plays a vital role in school life and involves students in wider extracurricular experiences, such as drama productions, the school’s choir, orchestra and wind band. There is also a much-loved Stars in Their Eyes talent showcase.
