- Boys-only from Year 7-11, one third of this school’s large sixth form is made up of girls. The comprehensive is guided by five core values — commitment, aspiration, respect, integrity and community — and aims to provide “a truly all-round education”.
- The sporting tradition is strong, especially in rugby and football. Teams have repeatedly won county and national championships and pupils have also excelled in golf, tennis and cross-country. Pupils are encouraged to participate, regardless of ability.
- A house system encourages competition in sports, too, as well as music and drama. There are house spelling bees in English and modern foreign languages.The six houses also give pupils the opportunity to take on leadership roles.
- Visits and residential trips in Britain and Europe open pupils’ eyes to new possibilities. At lunchtime and after school there is a busy schedule of clubs and societies including creative writing, rock band and board games.
- Alumni include the Radio 1 DJ Greg James and Andrew Lewin, the Labour MP for Welwyn Hatfield.
