What the school inspection says

Date of report
2020
Verdict
Excellent
“The school remains committed to its original aim of providing a first-class academic education for females. It sets out to ensure excellent pastoral care in which pupils develop the confidence and inner strength needed to thrive, succeed and be happy. Pupils make excellent progress across the full range of their subjects thanks to strong school leadership which ensures a broad curriculum. Pupils of all ages show high levels of self-confidence and self-esteem … [and] develop considerable resilience. They learn not to be afraid of failure but to learn from setbacks, so as to do better next time. Pupils have a very good understanding of the personal responsibility they bear for their own success and wellbeing.” There was a routine inspection in 2024.

About the school

  • Founded by the Girls’ Public Day School Trust in 1887, Sydenham High School has been housed at Horner Grange, formerly the home of a diamond prospector, since 1934.
  • Sydenham’s core values are courage and character, a curiosity for learning, a culture of kindness, and generosity of spirit. The motto is Nyle ye drede — Anglo-Saxon for “fear nothing”.
  • The school has plans for a new entrance building and sixth-form centre, including design and technology classrooms.
  • The four houses are named after the school’s founders: Shirreff, Gurney, Stanley and Grey. Inter-house competitions and events include music, drama, sports tournaments, debates and a house bake-off.
  • Among the school’s alumnae are the actress Margaret Lockwood and the La Roux singer Elly Jackson.
