About the school

  • With preps for girls and boys, and a senior school and sixth form for girls, this private day school’s philosophy is that single-sex education with co-ed opportunities – such as sporting events and mixed clubs — provides the best all-round education.
  • Surbiton HS was founded as a girls’ school in 1884, with strong links that remain with two local churches and a long-standing tradition of supporting local charities.
  • The school accepted its first boys in 1987, with the acquisition of Arundel House Boys’ School, and took over Charles Burney House, renamed Surbiton High Boys’ Prep, in 2017. “May love always lead us” is the motto for the boys.
  • Surbiton HS is part of United Learning, a group of nearly 100 independent schools and academies, and is rated “excellent” by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
  • Recent senior school trips have included glacier-climbing in Iceland, conservation in Costa Rica, hockey and netball in South Africa, tennis in the Algarve and skiing in Norway.
