About the school

  • The school was established in Kent in 1895 as a girls’ school at Stour House, Sandwich. It adopted the Stonar name when it moved to the larger Stonar House, also in Sandwich.
  • In 1920, Stour House School was taken over by three joint heads known as “the Three”. Gladys Crook, Isabel Blackwell and Edith Joslin were pioneering educators with a progressive outlook whose influence endures to this day.
  • Stonar offers an equestrian education alongside its academic curriculum. Facilities include an indoor school, an 80m x 40m surfaced arena, four cross-country courses and stabling for up to 65 horses and ponies.
  • The school was acquired in 2013 by Globeducate, a subsidiary of the American private equity firm Providence Equity, which operates more than 50 schools in several countries.
  • Stonar has accepted boys since 2016, when it became fully co-educational.
