“The school aims to provide a challenging academic education within a caring and supportive atmosphere … Pupils are hardworking and resilient [with] positive attitudes to learning … [They] make an excellent contribution to the school community, through undertaking roles of responsibility or acting as mentors, and to the wider community through volunteering and involvement in charity work … Pupils demonstrate excellent communication skills [and] are confident and articulate speakers … The school places great emphasis on the development of character; pupils are self-aware and demonstrate high levels of confidence, self-discipline and resilience … The school promotes an environment in which errors are seen as part of the learning process; this enables pupils to feel free to try something without fear of failure.” There was a routine inspection in 2023.

About the school

  • A day school educating boys and girls, Stockport Grammar believes that “when you inspire children to be curious about the world, you open up a lifetime of opportunity”.
  • Pupils have access to more than 200 extracurricular activities, from mindfulness, Mandarin and Model UN to “knitting and nattering”. There are also 30 musical ensembles, orchestras and choirs for a range of abilities. 
  • Music and Lamda qualifications and the Extended Project Qualification are offered in addition to A-levels.
  • The school awards means-tested bursaries at the 11+ and 16+ entry points, as well as academic and music scholarships.
