What the school inspection says

Date of report
2017
Verdict
Excellent
“The school aims that, by the time a girl leaves St Swithun’s, she will be well-educated, courageous, compassionate, committed and self-confident with a love of learning, a moral compass and a sense of humour. Pupils enjoy considerable success in academic examinations, as well as in external accredited examinations in music and in a range of local and national competitions. They are enthusiastic and often passionate learners. They have great pride in their school. Pupils are excellent citizens within their own community and have developed a considerable capacity to make a positive contribution to the wider world … The diversity of the school community, including boarders from overseas, helps pupils to regard mutual respect as a very natural part of their life in the school.” There was a regulatory compliance visit in 2020 and a routine inspection in 2024.

About the school

  • This independent day and boarding school for girls, set in 45 acres on the Hampshire Downs, encourages its students to “feel the fear and do it anyway”.
  • Etched above the front door is “Caritas, humilitas, sinceritas”, qualities inspired by St  Swithun — the 9th-centruy Bishop of Winchester — to encourage students to be kind, quietly self-confident and honest.
  • As a member of High Performance Learning’s world-class schools fellowship, St Swithun’s seeks to instil ambitions of high performance in everyone. It teaches girls to be risk-taking, enquiring, concerned for society and original, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Half of the 2024 A-level leavers achieved all As and above, and 10 per cent earned places at Cambridge or Oxford.
