It prepares young people extremely well for their future careers regardless of individual background or personal aspiration … Students’ behaviour is impeccable. They are punctual, polite and respectful, dressed smartly and prepared for lessons. Teachers know their subjects well and use their knowledge to good effect.”

*Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgment in inspections of state-funded schools. A five-point grading scale, including a new “exceptional” grade was introduced in November 2025.

About the school

The head teacher, Margaret Hattersley, is a former pupil at this coeducational Catholic voluntary academy in Ilkley, West Yorkshire.
The school opened in 1964 and now has about 1,200 pupils with a student-teacher ratio of 18:1.
St Mary’s Menston has a long tradition of popular, classical and jazz music clubs. There are regular open mic events and opportunities for students to compose, perform and conduct.
In 2024, 60 per cent of A-level grades were A*-B. Nearly half of St Mary’s Menston’s sixth-formers gained places at a Russell Group university.
The student parliament is a place where young people can share ideas and have a voice.
Simon Rix, a member of the Kaiser Chiefs band, is a former pupil; so is Stuart Murphy, the former head of the English National Opera.
