Verdict *
Outstanding
“St Mary’s College is a highly ambitious school. This ambition can be seen in all areas of the curriculum. Leaders have identified specific ‘golden threads’ around which they have designed the curriculum. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that pupils flourish. Pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (Send), make exceptional academic progress. … Pupils are thoroughly prepared for life in modern Britain. Personal development runs through all aspects of school life. Pupils have meaningful opportunities to be active citizens through roles such as personal, social and health education ambassadors, Agape ambassadors, and Shakespeare representatives. Pupils have access to a wide variety of extracurricular activities. These include an extensive sporting offer, an international film club and a geo-marine club.”

About the school

  • There are more than 60 clubs on offer, including lots of sports teams, which are supported by outstanding facilities. The Core Enrichment programme ensures that disadvantaged pupils have access to activities that supplement their studies.
  • School trips include visits to New York, Iceland, Spain and Italy.
  • The school runs tea and talk sessions every half term and has a wellbeing practitioner, a student liaison officer, a large safeguarding team and two mentors for each year group. The personal tutor system ensures that every child feels known and cared for and has access to a trusted adult.
  • There is financial assistance available for families who struggle with the cost of the school uniform, trips and travel to and from the school. It provides uniforms at no cost where necessary and also puts together food parcels and Christmas boxes for its most vulnerable families.
