Verdict
Excellent-good
“The school’s aim is to encourage, inspire, challenge and support pupils to fulfil their potential in a community founded on Catholic Christian values … [and] for all pupils to go on to become creators of a more just and peaceful society ... Pupils have a strong focus in lessons and work positively both as independent and collaborative learners ... display a good knowledge in all their subjects and apply this to new learning situations effectively … Pupils make strong progress and achieve results in examinations that exceed the expectations of their predictions, though not always reaching their full potential ... [They] are confident and resilient individuals and have an excellent understanding of what is needed for the next stage of their lives.”

About the school

  • Musical education is a key part of school life at St Joseph’s College, a co-ed day school in Reading, and the programme is enriched by a partnership with the world-class London Mozart Players.
  • A thriving co-curricular programme builds on the school’s five Cs — commitment, collaboration, confidence, compassion and communication — and covers the arts, sports, outdoor learning, Stem and Hale (humanities and language enrichment).
  • Pupils took part in the Model UN competition and won highly commended awards for their well-researched and pertinent contributions in the science and youth committees.
  • The importance of mental health is taught through PSHE lessons, collective worship and times of reflection. A robust pastoral structure of tutors and wellbeing staff is complemented by the services of a chaplain and the Wellbeing Centre to help to manage concerns from workload to friendships and bereavement.
  • Means-tested financial assistance is available.
