- “Aim higher” has been a fundamental aim since this non-denominational Christian day and boarding school was founded in Hertfordshire — from beginnings in the Lake District — in 1907. The school describes itself as “quirky”. Boarders make up almost 10 per cent of about 1,360 pupils aged 11-18 on the roll.
- Sport is central to school life. Many pupils take PE at GCSE level and teams compete locally and nationally — hoping to follow in the footsteps of former pupils such as the England rugby players Maro Itoje, Owen Farrell and George Ford.
- The house system is considered both a sanctuary and a springboard. It provides a framework for the tutor system of pastoral care as well as vigorous competition — and leads to a strong sense of belonging.
- Clubs cover music, drama, and varied interests from creative writing to trampolining and the popular Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. The Gay Straight Alliance and anti-racism groups meet regularly.
