- The CofE academy opened in 1968 with about 600 pupils. Today it has a student body of 2,000.
- Pupils study nine or ten subjects at GCSE and must take religious studies and three sciences. Options include art photography, business, dance, media studies, psychology and textiles.
- Academic studies and extracurriculars are supported by school trips such as PGL residentials, visits to London and Cern in Switzerland, and annual skiing and canoeing trips.
- The school operates a large associated sixth form with St John Fisher school. Students study a variety of A-level courses and applied courses at both campuses.
- All pupils take screening tests at the start of year 7 to identify those who may need extra learning support.
- St Aidan’s is the regional Lead School for Music, part of a government initiative to encourage more musical education in schools. Its many musical ensembles include a swing band, orchestra and chamber choir.
