“The school aims to ensure that every pupil feels empowered in achieving success, however they might define it. It wants them to feel confident as they go into the wider world knowing that they are able to contribute to it in meaningful ways … Pupils demonstrate an excellent level of knowledge, skills and understanding, and are highly effective in the way they work, both as independent and collaborative learners. They are very articulate communicators and display excellent levels of self-confidence and self-discipline. Pupils exhibit a very high degree of personal responsibility and support for each other, and have a clear moral code.” There was an additional inspection in 2024.

About the school

  • Redmaids’ was formed by the merging of two girls’ schools in 2016, but its heritage dates from 1634, making it the oldest-surviving girls’ school in the UK.
  • Set on a 12-acre campus in Bristol, the school runs a range of sporting activities during lunchtimes, after school and at weekends, including badminton, basketball, cross-country running, dance, football, gymnastics, swimming and tennis. Teams are particularly competitive in hockey, netball, cricket and athletics. An outdoor adventures programme offers surfing, kayaking, orienteering, bouldering and more. 
  • Music is integral to school life with 20 ensembles rehearsing weekly, regular concerts, a house music competition and an annual performing arts production. Other clubs include trampolining, language, philosophy, science, craft, chess, a Pride group and more. 
  • Additional qualifications offered to students include Btecs in food and nutrition, a wide range of AS-levels, creative writing, sports leadership and Level 3 maths, as well as the Higher Project Qualification and the Extended Project Qualification.
  • Financial assistance is available at all senior school entry points and awarded on a tiered basis. The school offers its own Athena development grants that can be claimed for any subject, pursuit or interest.
