- The first Earl of Ranelagh founded the school at Cranbourne Hall in Winkfield in 1709 for 20 boys and 20 girls. It was run by the Rev William Waterson for 50 years. By 1880 it had reached capacity and relocated to a larger site.
- Ranelagh gained academy status in 2011 and has high-performing specialist school status in art, business and enterprise.
- Its motto, “Though we are many, we are one body”, is taken from the liturgy of the Eucharist (Holy Communion) and underpins the school’s inclusive ethos. The happiness and wellbeing of pupils is a priority.
- The actor Nicholas Hoult (X-Men, Nosferatu) and the RAF pilot officer William Kenneth Manifould, who discovered the German Freya radar system on the French coast in 1941, are notable alumni.
