What the school inspection says

“Pupils at this school appreciate that their teachers are passionate and highly knowledgeable about their subjects. There is a strong focus on academic success in the school but creative and practical subjects are also highly valued. Pupils feel safe in school. Behaviour in lessons is focused and pupils feel that their teachers listen to what they have to say. Pupils have access to a wide range of extracurricular activities from Years 7 to 13. The arts are a particular strength. However, not all pupils are aware of what is on offer and many say they do not attend any clubs or activities. One parent reflected the views of many, [saying], ‘My children are thriving at the school and are thoroughly enjoying secondary school life.’”

*Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgment in inspections of state-funded schools. A five-point grading scale, including a new “exceptional” grade was introduced in November 2025.

About the school

Rainham Mark is so far the only coeducational selective state secondary out of Medway’s six grammar schools. Three others will end single-sex education in 2026.
It has academy status and underpins its broad curriculum with “Proud” principles — philosophy, reading, oracy, understanding the wider world and debate. About 25 subjects are available in the sixth form, alongside comprehensive careers education.
The enrichment programme aims to prepare students for life in the 21st century. Each year the school holds a charity week to raise thousands of pounds for good causes and there are opportunities to take part in the annual Medway Festival of Speech, Drama and Music each May.
Alumni include the former Conservative MPs Craig Mackinlay and Rehman Chishti.
