Verdict
Excellent
“The school aims to inspire boys to become outstanding young men who embrace the core values of the Christian qualities of humanity, which are compassion and understanding of others … Pupils at all levels, including those with special educational needs and English as an additional language, have excellent levels of knowledge and understanding across all areas of learning. All pupils feel safe to take risks in their learning. They achieve high levels of attainment regardless of their ability … In sport, teams achieve high levels of success in local, regional and national competitions … [and] pupils respond willingly to the high standard and expectations set by college staff, which, together with the inclusive nature of the full boarding community, promote very high levels of self-confidence, self-reliance and resilience amongst the pupil body.” There was a regulatory compliance visit in 2023.

About the school

  • Radley College, a traditional boys’ school in Oxfordshire, was named Public School of the Year 2024 by Tatler.
  • It has secured planning permission to build a 20-acre solar farm to fuel 60 per cent of its energy requirements and has started a project to rewild more than 100 acres of the 800-acre campus. It claims to have reduced its carbon footprint by almost 40 per cent over the past ten years.
  • Rugby, hockey, tennis, cricket and rowing are the core sports, but boys can choose to pursue almost any activity on land or water. Alongside orchestras, choirs and chamber ensembles, the school has its own record label and hosts regular jam nights for rock bands, DJs and producers.
  • Everyone attends chapel six nights a week and each boarding house meets in the evenings for Cocoa, a time to share food, drink and a chat. Phones are strictly banned.
  • Sixth-form students can take the Extended Project Qualification and curriculum extension programmes such as a mini MBA, international relations, and robotics and coding.
  • The Radley Keys Award, targeting boys at state schools, covers all fees and extras. There are six honorary scholarships for students at 13+ entry, awarded for excellence in academic study, art, drama, innovation, music and sport.
