About the school

  • Queen Ethelburga’s College in York offers “a more traditional academic route through GCSEs and A-levels” than its sister school, the Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s (also on our list).
  • Students at QE College are expected to be “highly aspirational and make outstanding academic progress”. At GCSE, students complete half of their GCSEs in Year 10 and the other half in Year 11, with students taught in classes based on both their ability and also interest in the subject.
  • An array of “super-curricular” options are timetabled to build on students’ interests and talents. These include linguistics, philosophy, psychology, law and critical thinking.
  • The QE Futures Programme supports those preparing university applications, from small group sessions to admission test practice and mock interviews. Those applying to Oxbridge receive additional support through the Early Applicant Programme. It also helps those making applications for alternative further study and prepares them for work in the real world.
  • Many trips and visits are available to students, from Christmas shopping in Cologne to visiting Iceland, Venice or Berlin for culture and language exchanges.
