Verdict
Excellent
“The school aims to combine the best of traditional values with a forward-thinking approach which prepares pupils to take their place in the modern world. The overall attainment of pupils of all ages, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (Send) or English as an additional language (EAL), demonstrates excellent progress and successful fulfilment of the school’s aims. Pupils’ attitudes to learning are excellent, they take pride in their work and show initiative and independence. [Their] achievements in external competitions, in gaining other academic distinctions beyond examinations, and their success in art, music, drama and the arts are excellent. The school is highly successful in meeting its aim to foster in its pupils a sense of discovery, intellectual curiosity and self-confidence.”

About the school

  • From September 2026, Queen Elizabeth Grammar School will join Wakefield Girls' High School and Wakefield Grammar Pre-Preparatory School in one co-ed diamond model school for pupils aged 3-18.
  • “The Wakefield Way” ethos celebrates and nurtures individual learning needs.
  • QEGS dates back to the reign of Elizabeth I — with Mary Queen of Scots royally despatched and the Spanish Armada recently defeated, the citizens of Wakefield used this time of relative peace to focus on the education of local boys.
  • Its alumni association is the Old Savilians’ Club, named after five of the 14 original governors who bore the name Savile.
  • The Radcliffe Scholars programme is a hallmark of academic enrichment at QEGS: it provides tailored support to those applying to Oxbridge and challenges pupils to take the Mensa test.
  • Boys are encouraged to train in roles of peer support, helping new pupils with anything from settling in to homework and friendship advice.
