“Pupils are proud to attend Northampton School for Boys. They demonstrate remarkable attitudes and commitment to all the opportunities that the school provides. There is a real sense of community built on the culture of ‘respect the past, secure the future’. The school has the very highest expectations of what pupils can achieve. The curriculum is aspirational for all. Pupils with Send thrive alongside their peers. The school makes sure that all pupils benefit from an astonishing array of enrichment activities. The sports and expressive arts activities stretch pupils’ talents and offer them opportunities to compete at the highest level.”

*Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgment in inspections of state-funded schools. A five-point grading scale, including a new “exceptional” grade was introduced in November 2025.

About the school

NSB was founded in 1541 by Thomas Chipsey, who served as mayor of Northampton several times, and whose fellow trustees included Lawrence Washington, an ancestor of George Washington, the first president of the United States.
Multimillion-pound investments include an indoor swimming centre, a dance facility and a refurbished theatre and music department.
Pupils have reached the national finals in several sports, and an NSB team has won the U15 England rugby title.
Students at Northampton School, an 11-16 free school that opened in 2023, gain an automatic place in NSB’s coeducational sixth form, subject to entry requirements.
Northampton School for Boys was awarded Comprehensive School of the Year in the East Midlands 2025
