Verdict *
Outstanding
“Students make outstanding progress across a range of subjects. They make exceptional progress in mathematics ... Students enjoy outstanding opportunities to take part in numerous clubs and activities at lunchtimes and after school. This helps to build the excellent relationships between students and staff which are at the heart of students’ highly successful learning. There is a strong focus throughout the school on promoting students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. This develops students’ leadership skills, teamwork and creativity outstandingly well.”

About the school

  • NSB was founded in 1541 by Thomas Chipsey, who served as mayor of Northampton several times, and whose fellow trustees included Lawrence Washington, an ancestor of George Washington, the first president of the United States.
  • Multimillion-pound investments in recent years include an indoor swimming centre, dance facility and a refurbished theatre and music department.
  • Pupils have recently reached the national finals in several sports, and an NSB team won the U15 England rugby title.
  • Students at Northampton School, an 11-16 free school that opened in 2023, gain an automatic place in NSB’s co-educational sixth form subject to entry requirements.
