Verdict
Excellent
“The school aims to provide an ambitious academic education within a nurturing environment, which empowers all pupils with the confidence to embrace new challenges, and the determination to recognise and achieve excellence … Pupils have a very strong sense of community and a well-developed appreciation of the wide diversity within the school … [They] have an acute awareness of the fragility of their natural surroundings and strongly appreciate the non-material world. They are encouraged to stop and notice their natural environment.” There was a routine inspection in 2024.

About the school

  • NLC is aiming to be a leading eco-school and has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Sustainable changes are in evidence everywhere: beef and lamb are off the menu and the school has installed mammal-print tunnels, to assess local biodiversity, as well as hedgehog houses and bat boxes.
  • The school was the first in the world to perform Six: Teen Edition, a new version of the hit West End musical about the six wives of Henry VIII.
  • Opportunities for leadership, travel, public speaking, performance, creative expression, sports, and outdoor activities abound, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, choirs and orchestras, surfing, scuba diving and skiing. Clubs and societies range from philosophy to climate change, human rights to chess, and dance to literature, and every student participates in charity work.
  • Means-tested bursaries are available at ages 11 and 16 and cover up to 100 per cent of school fees. Music scholarships are annual awards worth the equivalent of individual music lessons.
