“The school aims to enable pupils to discover and develop their individual abilities through academic, sporting and artistic opportunities. It intends that pupils will become considerate, self-aware, self-confident and socially adept individuals. Pupils develop a wide range of good knowledge and skills in all the required areas of learning and their co-curricular pursuits. They are all encouraged to discover something in which they can ‘Be Brilliant’. The school is highly successful in achieving its aim in this respect. Many pupils are eager and committed learners, willing to work hard whether independently or collaboratively. The pupils’ sporting achievements are outstanding. Their frequent involvement in sports and expert coaching is facilitated by boarding and the school continues to prepare pupils to reach the highest levels of sporting success. It counts numerous Olympians amongst its alumni.”

About the school

  • Founded in 1935 in Street, Somerset, Millfield is the largest co-educational boarding school. Approximately 1,330 students from 75 countries are on the register.
  • In the 1940s it became the first educational institution in England to successfully help dyslexic students. The “Millfield Method” was used to help Martin Attlee, the son of the then deputy prime minister, to overcome his word blindness. The school maintains an international reputation for its work with dyslexic students today.
  • Facilities include a 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool, golf course, equestrian centre with a 90-horse capacity and a 450-seat theatre.
  • Millfield School is renowned for its sports provision, with representation at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. Pupils are instructed by more than 50 highly experienced specialist youth sports coaches.
  • More than 60 students annually gain scholarships in academics and sports to US universities, with many other graduates securing places at Russell Group Universities.
