About the school

  • Loretto is Scotland’s oldest boarding school, founded in 1827 by Rev Thomas Langhorne.
  • The motto is Spartam nactus es, hanc exorna — “You were born with talents, nurture them”.
  • Set on an 85-acre campus outside Edinburgh, the co-ed day and boarding school’s extracurricular programme spans yoga, debating, ceramics and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, as well as sports including equestrian, fives, rugby, tennis and golf.
  • The Loretto Golf Academy, launched in 2002 and the first of its kind in an independent school, has helped dozens of aspiring golfers to further their ambitions at US colleges and UK universities. It has also set up a Loretto Junior Golf Tour.
  • Means-tested bursaries cover from 20 per cent to 100 per cent of fees and scholarships are awarded for excellence in fields including academic studies, drama, art, golf, music, piping and drumming, and sport.
