“The school aims to provide a genuinely holistic education of the highest value for both boarding and day pupils. It seeks to develop a warm and supportive boarding community offering a comprehensive, all-round education where the pupils are valued as individuals. The pupils are keen to achieve, both in and out of the classroom … Pupils who show particular individual talents in a certain area are able to excel. Pupils throughout the school, including boarders, display outstanding social awareness. They appreciate the opportunity to develop culturally within the school, due to living in a multicultural environment within their boarding houses.” There was a regulatory compliance visit in 2023.

About the school

  • King’s Bruton is a co-ed day and boarding school in Somerset. It has about 350 pupils.
  • The £2.45 million Queen Elizabeth Music School was completed in 2018 in celebration of the school’s quincentenary. Queen Elizabeth II opened the building the following year. It has a teaching and rehearsal space, a recital hall and a recording suite. More than 40 public performances take place each year.
  • Almost all – 98 per cent – of its pupils secure places at their first-choice university, including Oxbridge and Russell Group institutions.
  • The headteacher, Ian Wilmshurst, sums up the school’s approach: “Your son and daughter will not be allowed to drift, to hide or to get lost at King’s.”
  • Notable alumni include the Times Literary Supplement writer John Sturrock and the comedian and TV presenter Marcus Brigstocke.
