“Pupils are happy coming to school. They enjoy their learning, especially in mathematics and science … Parents and pupils who responded to inspectors all agreed that teachers challenge all pupils, whatever their circumstances, to do as well as they can. The school is highly successful in ensuring all pupils are successful in their outcomes … Pupils have a very extensive range of sporting, musical and other cultural opportunities. Those who recently visited Italy on a geography trip were enthusiastic about their experience. They have a very wide choice of GCSE subjects, including Mandarin.”

*Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgment in inspections of state-funded schools. A five-point grading scale, including a new “exceptional” grade was introduced in November 2025.

About the school

One of 14 schools under the King Edward VI Foundation umbrella, it was established in 1883 and has been boys-only since 1911.
The houses are named after its first five headmasters: Temperley, Floyd, Manton, Brandon and Hawley.
A 2008 extension to the 1963 Douglas House building is named the Watcyn Thomas Wing after the Welsh rugby international who taught at the school for 37 years.
Sport is a particular strength here, and it is part of the King Edward School Sport Partnership, offering sporting opportunities to pupils of local primary and secondary schools.
Notable Aston Old Edwardians include the politician Nick Timothy and the radio presenter Les Ross.
