- JHGS was founded in 1893 as the Schools of Science and Art.
- In 1970 it was renamed John Hampden school, after the 17th-century MP who died in the English Civil War.
- It opened its new Innovation Hub in 2021 in an expansion paid for by government funding.
- The motto, “Quit ye like men”, is taken from 1 Corinthians, and the logo is based on the swan emblem of Buckinghamshire.
- The chef Heston Blumenthal and the fantasy author Sir Terry Pratchett are among the school’s famous former pupils.
