What the school inspection says

Date of report
2019
Verdict *
Good
“One aspect that shines through is the inclusive nature of the school, as seen in the behaviour and attitudes of staff and pupils. Pupils are safe from intolerance and unkindness. Lessons are typically calm and productive. Pupils are polite and attentive. They are confident to share their ideas in front of others. Leaders and teachers have high expectations of what pupils should achieve. While the quality of planning and teaching is strong at a subject level in Key Stage 3, provision overall is weaker than at Key Stage 4.”

About the school

  • The college is the only UK state school where all teaching is based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, which seeks a balance between academic excellence and a well-rounded, values-driven education. Year 7 pupils study the IB middle years programme, adapted to align with GCSE requirements, then progress to the diploma programme or career-related programme.
  • The college is rolling out a 1:1 device scheme to give students their own Chromebook to help with their studies.
  • All students make three term-long enrichment choices (one each of creativity, activity and service) that take place on Wednesday afternoons. Learning is further enhanced through forays abroad, such as a school science trip to the Cern nuclear research centre in Switzerland.
  • A wide variety of creative and performing arts activities are on offer, as well as a busy sports calendar and numerous clubs and societies. The college has an Artsmark Gold Award, accredited by Arts Council England.
  • The college also holds the Gold Carnegie Medal for mental health, which recognises the value it places on the wellbeing of its staff and students.
