“Pupils feel proud to attend the Howard of Effingham School, where they experience a wide range of opportunities and a strong sense of community. They appreciate that their teachers have high expectations of what they will accomplish… and they achieve well. Many pupils describe how school prepares them for their next steps in life because of its focus on developing their character and building resilience. Corridors and classrooms are calm and orderly, which enables pupils to learn without distractions. Pupils typically treat each other with kindness and respect. Teachers are passionate about their subject areas and have impressive expertise.”

*Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgment in inspections of state-funded schools. A five-point grading scale, including a new “exceptional” grade was introduced in November 2025.

About the school

The HowardFest music festival is a summer highlight, with students from all year groups — and some returning alumni — performing live.
There are plenty of opportunities for young people to develop academically and socially in a stimulating, caring environment.
The coeducational academy is ideally placed in the Surrey Hills for outdoor adventures under the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. Most students join in — so far achieving bronze or silver — and the gold award is on the way for future Year 12 students.
There is a wide range of clubs and trips to bring out the best in all pupils.
Sixth-formers can mix and match A-levels and vocational courses, which include BTecs in travel and tourism, and sport.
