- It was named the State Secondary School of the Year in the North and State Secondary School of the Year in the North for Academic Excellence in The Sunday Times Parent Power 2025.
- The sixth-form study and social building is called the Jo Cox Centre, in memory of the MP who was a former head girl of the school.
- Other notable former pupils include Sir Hubert Houldsworth, chairman of the National Coal Board in the 1950s, after whom one of the school’s four houses is named.
- Peter Roberts, the head teacher, has long family links with the school — he was a pupil in the 1980s and his children later became the fourth generation to attend.
