What the school inspection says

“To quote the head teacher: ‘We work hard and we play hard.’ The school is friendly and welcoming, and an exciting place in which to learn. Expectations are high and pupils are very polite, articulate and courteous. They follow an ambitious curriculum. The pace of learning is fast. Teachers cover Key Stage 3, for example, in two years rather than three. However, progress in the sixth form is not as strong as in the main school. Clubs include such things as a dice game club, mindfulness, astronomy and ecopolitics clubs. Behaviour and attitudes are outstanding. Pupils have confidence that staff will help them solve any problems.”

*Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgment in inspections of state-funded schools. A five-point grading scale, including a new “exceptional” grade was introduced in November 2025.

About the school

HGS was founded in 1898 and became an academy in 2010.
It was named the State Secondary School of the Year in the North and State Secondary School of the Year in the North for Academic Excellence in The Sunday Times Parent Power 2025.
The sixth-form study and social building is called the Jo Cox Centre, in memory of the MP who was a former head girl of the school.
Other notable former pupils include Sir Hubert Houldsworth, chairman of the National Coal Board in the 1950s, after whom one of the school’s four houses is named.
Peter Roberts, the head teacher, has long family links with the school — he was a pupil in the 1980s and his children later became the fourth generation to attend.
