“Gosforth Academy is a calm, orderly and purposeful learning environment where pupils feel safe. Pupils treat one another with respect. Staff build positive relationships with pupils. Leaders have developed a culture of high expectation. A large majority of pupils follow academic routes. Pupils work hard and achieve well. Leaders and staff are ambitious for pupils to do well, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (Send) … The school has strong links with local charities, including the Newcastle United Foundation, which provides opportunities for pupils throughout the school.”

*Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgment in inspections of state-funded schools. A five-point grading scale, including a new “exceptional” grade was introduced in November 2025.

About the school

Formerly a specialist language college, Gos hillforth Academy continues to have a strong focus on modern foreign languages with five offered at GCSE and A-level: French, German, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin.
The school in Newcastle upon Tyne has more than 2,000 pupils aged 13-18 and is known for its sporting excellence, particularly in rugby. It has links with Newcastle Falcons Rugby Club, providing opportunities for coaching, training and pathways into elite sport.
The enrichment programme timetables activities every day from debating and sports to the Swiftie society.
Alan Shearer, the former England and Newcastle United footballer, is a former pupil, as well as Mark and David Knopfler, the guitarist brothers who founded Dire Straits.
