Date of report
2022
Verdict
Excellent
“The school’s aim is to provide a balanced education within a supportive, friendly and happy community. This is to be achieved by nurturing, challenging and encouraging pupils, whatever their ability, in order to develop their talents in an atmosphere of mutual trust and tolerance. Pupils’ achievement is excellent … The school atmosphere is highly conducive to learning, underpinned by a strong sense of community with a shared purpose. Pupils rise to the aspirational targets their teachers set. They develop very strong study skills, related to their strong motivation to learn [and] display excellent attitudes to learning. Pupils are very self-aware and reflective. They have a keenly felt sense of justice, and a desire to help others.” There was an additional inspection in 2024.

About the school

  • The girls’ day school was founded in 1878 by the Reverend Canon Francis Holland in Baker Street, and moved to its present site near the park’s Clarence Gate in 1915.
  • The Francis Holland motto is taken from Psalm 144: “That our daughters be as the polished corners of the temple.” Compassion, knowledge, perseverance and spirit are the school’s “core values”.
  • Expansion work in recent years has included the opening of new art, drama and music studios, including the Helen McCrory Studio Theatre, and a classics centre in 2021, and a new sixth-form centre, Linhope House, in 2022.
  • Alumnae include the actresses Dame Joan Collins, Amanda Donohoe and Emilia Fox, and the actress and author Jackie Collins.
