“Emmanuel College teaches pupils that they are ‘infinitely precious’. This core belief, underpinned by the school’s Christian ethos, is lived out by the school. Staff care deeply about pupils. Pupils rise to the very high expectations that the school has of them. They behave exceptionally well and take their learning seriously. The curriculum is enriched by a wide range of opportunities to learn more. For example, pupils learn British Sign Language and complete additional examinations in music, drama and public speaking. The school’s work to develop pupils’ vocabulary is impressive. As a result, pupils articulate themselves confidently and maturely.”

About the school

In Gateshead, Emmanuel College is a secondary school and sixth form founded in 1990 as a city technology college (CTC).
It remains one of only three CTCs in England not to have converted to academy status, retaining its original governance structure.
The school has a Christian ethos that emphasises service, community engagement and personal transformation, welcoming students from a broad range of backgrounds and abilities.
With more than 1,500 students and about 160 staff, the college is a large and vibrant community.
Emmanuel has achieved “outstanding” at every Ofsted inspection since its establishment, most recently in October 2024, marking a remarkable record of consistent excellence.
Notable former pupils include the novelist Onyi Nwabineli and pop singer Michelle Heaton.
