Verdict *
Outstanding
“Dame Alice Owen’s school is a wonderful place to come to learn. It supports pupils to become independent and resilient individuals. There is a palpable sense of community here, where pupils from all backgrounds thrive. The school has high aspirations for its pupils. The curriculum is ambitious right from the very first day pupils arrive. Teachers are passionate about what they teach and the pupils enjoy what they learn. Teachers carefully think about the best way to teach all their pupils. This means that pupils achieve exceptionally well. Expectations for behaviour are very high. Pupils say that it is ‘cool to do well here’ ... Leaders are successful in finding extra funding to help some pupils access opportunities like trips and music tuition. This ensures that pupils’ financial background is not a barrier to their success.”

About the school

  • For any subject there is a linked club or competition providing pupils with opportunities to explore beyond the curriculum. There are also clubs where they can find common ground in identity (African-Caribbean Society, Christian Union, LGBT history) or leisure activities (books, chess, Warhammer). Musical outlets include six orchestras, concert, soul and big bands and at least five choirs. About five hundred individual music lessons take place every week and talented pupils show off their skills during an annual arts programme that comprises 13 concerts, two school plays and a musical. A high proportion of students undertake the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.
  • Most students continue their studies at Russell Group universities, with between 16 and 25 going to Oxford or Cambridge each year.
  • Key staff are well trained in all aspects of wellbeing and emotional health such as mental health first aid and how to support young people affected by self-harm, anxiety and bereavement. The school is one of 15 schools in the country chosen to be part of the Anti-Bullying Alliance pilot scheme.
  • The school has a number of private funds that provide financial assistance for both curricular and extracurricular activities. Help is available for students who may be financially disadvantaged, or to further develop excellence in their field to fulfil their potential.
