Verdict
Excellent
“The college is an international community committed to high academic standards, dedication and mutual respect. Pupils, supported by staff, are expected to behave with kindness in a way that promotes harmony, decent and trust. The pupils’ high achievement fulfils the school’s aim to provide an excellent academic education … Pupils are mature and thoughtful [and] understand themselves well. This helps them to manage their emotions under stress and to develop appropriate strategies to cope with their workload. Pupils are aware of their responsibility to contribute positively to the school and many take the initiative in organising school events.” There was a regulatory compliance visit in 2021.

About the school

  • Pupils of more than 40 nationalities study at this international boarding and day school, founded in 1949 on a 73-acre campus in Shropshire.
  • The main school building is a manor house dating to 1814. The grounds also include the ruins of the 13th-century Acton Burnell Castle and the remains of the Parliament Barn, where the first parliamentary meeting of the English Commons is said to have taken place in 1283.
  • A £12 million two-storey science block — described by The Good Schools Guide as “among the most sophisticated we’ve seen”, and complete with a 10ft bear skeleton in the foyer — opened in 2019.
  • Concord has 17 boarding residences, with the largest (Bell) accommodating 70 boarders and the smallest (Cherry Orchard) five.
  • To help foreign students acclimatise to the UK the school hosts a British Day, bringing in dodgems, ice cream and a ferris wheel.
