- The school was founded in 1554 as The Free Grammar School of King Philip and Queen Mary.
- The boys’ school merged with the Girls’ Grammar School, on whose site the main school operates today, in 1985. The sixth form is based in the listed 18th-century buildings on York Street, which were actually built in Clitheroe churchyard in 1781 and moved stone by stone to their present location in 1834.
- The sixth form has about 650 pupils — almost as many as the main school — who are drawn from more than 40 secondary schools across the area.
- Former pupils include Peter Hargreaves, co-founder of the financial services company Hargreaves Lansdown, and the Olympic pentathlete Samantha Murray.
