About the school

  • Caterham School, in Surrey, is the only one in the UK to have a machine-learning engineer and a professional woodsman on staff, reflecting its focus on innovation and environmental sustainability. The school has saved a 160-acre wood from becoming a golf course and regenerated the land, planting hundreds of trees.
  • Caterham’s innovation centre is home to the Edge (“explore, develop, grow, evolve”) curriculum and a range of digital clubs. There is a Stem lending library for local state schools, who can borrow an inflatable planetarium, robots, tablets, drones and computers, and receive training.
  • More than 60 clubs run before and after school, from coding, virtual reality and electric car engineering to high ropes, board games, sports and orienteering. The eco committee is connected to international schools via Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots programme.
  • Innovation and engineering scholarships complement the more traditional academic, art, music, dance and sport options. Transformational 110 per cent bursaries are available, as well as means-tested mid-range bursaries. The school works with the Royal National SpringBoard Foundation for boarding and day bursary applicants.
