Verdict
Excellent
“The school aims to provide an outstanding academic education which inspires every pupil to excel. Pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding across the curriculum are outstanding. They are excellent communicators both formally and informally … and willingly and successfully participate in the school’s extensive co-curricular programme, developing resilience and confidence as they gain new skills … They have an inherent, subtle sense of spirituality and show deep appreciation of non-materialistic aspects of life.”

About the school

  • Burgess Hill is a girls-only day and boarding school set in 14 acres within a conservation area in West Sussex, and surrounded by natural woodland.
  • Extracurricular activities include sports such as hockey, netball, athletics, volleyball, trampolining, horse riding and skiing, as well as opportunities to take part in professional-level drama productions and perform in orchestras, ensembles and choirs.
  • The four school houses were renamed by the pupils in 2019: Watson (after the actress, Emma), Austen (Jane), Pankhurst (Emmeline) and Williams (Serena).
  • Burgess Hill is a tight-knit community where staff know the students well. From a young age, girls learn about the benefit to their wellbeing of a balanced diet, sleep and physical exercise.
  • Pupils joining in Years 7, 9 and 12 can apply for art, drama, music and sport scholarships. Design technology and art textiles scholarships are available in Years 9 and 12. The Bold Award provides a fully funded place in the sixth form for state-school applicants.
