About the school

  • Bristol Grammar School was founded in 1532 for the teaching of “good manners and literature”. The mixed day school is aiming to provide means-tested bursaries worth at least 50 per cent of fees to one in four children, and plans to raise £12 million by 2032, the school’s 500th anniversary.
  • During the past academic year, 100 teams competed in 900 fixtures, and there were 1,700 performance opportunities in the arts. The school runs 190 clubs, from beekeeping to chess and British sign language, as well as numerous trips and outdoor education events.
  • The wellbeing programme empowers pupils to tackle issues of racial and gender inequality through workshops and seminars. Wellbeing sessions are accompanied by parent talks. More than 70 per cent of teachers and 30 per cent of support staff are trained as mental health first-aiders.
  • There are grants for academic study, sports and creative and performing arts.  Means-tested bursaries cover from 10 per cent to 100 per cent of fees, and there is a refugee admissions programme.
