“The school aims to realise the potential of each pupil by providing challenge, encouraging and promoting teamwork, and developing leadership capabilities. It aspires for its pupils to leave as self-confident young people with the knowledge, skills and attributes to allow them to lead a happy and fulfilled life, and make a difference for good in the wider community … Pupils achieve at an exceptional standard in sport … Standards in music and the performing arts are good ... They are unafraid to accept risk, to be academically adventurous, or to take on challenges. Pupils display strong perseverance if challenged by difficult work.” There was a regulatory compliance visit in 2019 and a routine inspection in 2024.

About the school

  • The school organises sports fixtures and outdoor learning, along with a huge number of clubs and societies, covering interests such as drama, music, reading and chess.
  • Pupils hone their public speaking skills at the junior and senior literary and debating forums.
  • The older students take on leadership and mentoring roles by helping to run clubs.
  • The Ainsworth Society gives about 15 strongly academic boys the opportunity to discuss and debate with the head teacher.
  • One in five pupils receives a means-tested bursary that is awarded based on their performance in the entrance exam — some pupils may be offered full remission of fees. Scholarships are available to pupils entering Year 7.
