- Blundell’s School in Devon was founded in 1604 with a £2,400 legacy from Peter Blundell, a wealthy local cloth merchant. The motto is Pro patria populoque (“For the country and the people”).
- It is open to day pupils but also offers full, weekly and flexi boarding. For students who come to Blundell’s from overseas, a coach pick-up and drop-off system runs between the school and Heathrow to facilitate school holidays.
- Pupils can learn to surf on the beaches and join outdoor pursuits on Exmoor and Dartmoor, including the Ten Tors challenge. Blundell’s has one of the highest success rates in the southwest for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.
- Former pupils include RD Blackmore, the author of Lorna Doone; Jack Russell, the breeder of the eponymous terrier; and Ben Collins, aka the Stig from Top Gear.
