About the school

  • Bablake can trace its history to 1344, when Isabella of France, the widow of Edward II, gave land for the founding of St John’s Church, from which the school grew.
  • A planned merger with the nearby King Henry VIII School, which is also part of the Coventry School Foundation, was cancelled in 2021. Some sixth-form classes are shared between the schools.
  • The motto is Spiritus vicis (“The spirit of opportunity”) and the golden lion crest is that of the 16th-century mayor of Coventry Thomas Wheatley, a benefactor of the school.
  • Bablake has been on its present site since 1890, and 2025 will mark 50 years since the first female pupils were admitted.
  • Former students are known as Old Wheatleyans. They include the former Observer editor Donald Trelford, the Olympic equestrian Nick Skelton and the Paralympic silver and bronze medallist Kare Adenegan.
