Verdict
Excellent
“The school’s aim is to provide a broad, holistic education within a caring school community, guiding each individual to develop and grow into global citizens. Pupils’ attitudes to learning are excellent. Pupils of all ages work exceptionally well with their peers, both in lessons and in co-curricular activities. They work independently with focus and determination, and show great perseverance when faced with new and difficult challenges. Pupils demonstrate excellent levels of self-understanding … [and ]display a level of maturity often beyond their years … Pupils across the school play an active role in contributing to the school community.” There was a short visit in 2023.

About the school

  • AKS Lytham is an accredited Round Square school. It was formed in 2012 through the merger of Arnold School in Blackpool and King Edward VII and Queen Mary School (KEQMS) in Lytham St. Annes.
  • The school’s “inquiry learning” initiative, where Year 12 students choose their own in-depth research project, is a key part of its ethos.
  • Notable alumni of the original schools include Sir William Lyons, the founder of Jaguar Cars; Dr Michael Smith, winner of the Nobel prize in chemistry in 1993; Chris Lowe of Pet Shop Boys; and the actress Jenna Coleman.
  • A medical career is a popular choice among AKS leavers, with six members of the 2024 cohort set to start medical school in 2025, and one more pursuing a veterinary degree.
  • The latest stats show 94 per cent of learners from Reception to Year 6 are working beyond age-related expectations for reading and maths.
